About Us

The Energy Cooperative is a not-for-profit, member-owned utility serving more than 72,000 electric, natural gas and propane accounts across east central Ohio. Unlike traditional utilities, we do not have customers or shareholders—we have members, and everything we do is focused on serving their needs.

We provide residential, business, commercial, and industrial energy services for members in Licking, Knox and Muskingum counties.

The Energy Cooperative is the trade name used by Licking Rural Electrification, Inc. and its family of companies, which operate as separate corporations:

  • Licking Rural Electrification (LRE)
  • National Gas & Oil Cooperative (NGO)
  • Producers Gas Sales
  • NGO Development Corporation (NGO-D)
  • NGO Transmission, Inc. (NGO-T)
  • NGO Propane (NGO-P)

Together, these entities form a strong, community-focused network committed to delivering safe, affordable and sustainable energy solutions while supporting the communities we serve.

Our History

In 1936, a group of farmers in Licking and Knox counties decided to take advantage of a federal program offered by the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) by forming an electric cooperative known as Licking Rural Electrification (LRE). 

In October of 1998, Licking Rural Electrification, Inc. acquired National Gas & Oil Company and its subsidiaries, National Gas & Oil Corp., Producers Gas Sales, NGO Development Corp., NGO Transmission, Inc., and NGO Propane. The Energy Cooperative is the trade name used by LRE and its subsidiaries, which operate as separate corporations.

The Energy Cooperative now has more than 72,000 accounts. The majority of members live in Knox, Licking and Muskingum counties.
